Paying for Chinese AI from abroad: what the docs show, and what they do not

Payment is the practical blocker, and it is also where English blogs invent a card brand. We did not run a card. This page is a map of which vendors publish a USD price, and the workaround that does not require us to pretend we checked out.

What is priced in USD on a page we fetched

Z.AI’s model table is in USD. The coding-plan migration notice is in USD. DeepSeek’s token table is in USD. Kimi’s caching doc is in USD, and Amazon Bedrock lists Kimi K3 in USD. Alibaba Cloud is a normal cloud bill if you are on the international account, which is not the China console.

None of those pages, in the sections we used, included a table of Visa versus Mastercard versus a local wallet that we could copy without adding a guess. So we will not.

The workaround, with the price catch

OpenRouter takes the payment and routes the model. For DeepSeek V4.1 Flash you give up the off-peak half-price. For GLM-5.3 and Kimi K3 you might be looking at a cheap host that is not the lab. Both effects are written up in OpenRouter versus direct. Convenience is real. It is not free.

Questions

Can I pay DeepSeek with a foreign card?

We did not try. The docs describe a topped-up balance and do not give us a card list we are willing to reprint.

What works if the lab rejects the card?

OpenRouter bills separately and lists the models. You pay OpenRouter's price, which is not always the lab's price.
