Translation, homework, and ordinary writing are why a lot of people outside China open a Chinese chatbot. They are also the prompts that quietly include a passport number, a medical letter, or a client’s draft. This page is the boundary. It is not a leaderboard. We did not store a translation score, and we will not borrow a coding score and call it fluency.

What is actually available

Qwen Chat is a website, chat.qwen.ai, separate from the API. The Qwen Chat note is the download warning: a modified APK is not the product. DeepSeek’s official iOS and Play listings describe a free assistant. That is the strongest “free chat” citation we have, and DeepSeek is also the product with the clearest government restrictions. Both can be true. The DeepSeek free guide and the safety guide split them.

Doubao is ByteDance’s China chatbot. We did not install it, so we will not claim an English study mode. If you want ByteDance’s models as an API with a USD price, that is BytePlus, which is a worse interface for a menu and a better one for a developer. Writing and study

A model can outline, quiz you, or rewrite a sentence you wrote. It should not sit an exam for you, and it should not see an unpublished manuscript you cannot afford to leak. Consumer apps are the wrong place for a client’s document even when the model is good at the language. If you are a developer and the text is code, you are on the wrong page. The API, if you insist, is metered. DeepSeek’s pricing page has no free API tier that we found. Qwen’s international console and the China console are different accounts, and we still have not confirmed a free-token number worth printing. See the Qwen free-tier guide.

What “good at Chinese” does not mean

Simplified and traditional are different tasks. A menu in a regional dialect is a third task. We did not run those tests. Kling’s video guide lists dialect speech for a video model. That is not evidence a chatbot will translate a contract. Keep the job smaller than the claim.

Which Chinese model is best at English to Chinese?

We do not have a translation benchmark in the repo. Use a short paragraph you can check, on a product whose listing you can open, and do not trust a single score from a blog.

Can I paste a contract?

No. A contract is the kind of document the safety guide tells you to keep off a consumer chatbot. Translate a sentence you could read aloud.
